Elements and Modes: The Chart’s Temperament Grid

Every one of the twelve signs is just a combination of two ingredients: an element — the fuel — and a mode — the gearbox. Four fuels × three gears = twelve signs, no exceptions. Learn the grid and you can profile a chart’s temperament in a minute, before touching a single aspect.

The four fuels

• Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): runs on inspiration and action. Needs a mission; wilts under routine.
• Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): runs on results and the senses. Needs something real to build; distrusts theory without proof.
• Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): runs on ideas and exchange. Needs conversation and perspective; suffocates in isolation.
• Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): runs on feeling and connection. Needs emotional truth; goes numb in cold environments.

The three gears

• Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): first gear — ignition. Starts things brilliantly; finishing is another matter.
• Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): cruise control. Sustains, concentrates, refuses to quit — or to change lanes.
• Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): the adaptive gear. Adjusts, translates, finds the workaround — and sometimes forgets where it was going.

The 60-second temperament reading

1. Count the planets by element (include the Ascendant). The dominant element is the person’s default fuel; a missing element is a blind spot they usually marry, hire or envy.
2. Count by mode. Dominant cardinal = a starter; fixed = a finisher; mutable = a translator.
3. Put the two words together — “a fixed water person”, “a cardinal air person” — and you already know how they handle stress, deadlines and change better than most interviews would tell you.

Try it yourself

Run the count on your own chart. Then run it on someone you find difficult. Nine times out of ten, the friction is right there in the grid: your fuel and their fuel, your gear and their gear.

Worked example: counting the balance

Count the ten planets by element in the chart above. Fire: Sun, Jupiter, Neptune. Earth: Mercury, Uranus, Pluto, Saturn. Air: Venus, Mars. Water: Moon.

One water placement. That is the headline. This is someone who processes feeling through action and analysis rather than through feeling it, and who will describe an emotional problem as a logistics problem. Not cold — under-equipped in that one register, which is a very different and much kinder thing to say.

And by mode? Cardinal: Sun, Mars, Saturn, North Node. Fixed: Moon, Jupiter, Mercury. Mutable: Venus, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. Fairly even, with a cardinal edge — so this person starts things readily but the fixed Moon and Jupiter mean they do not let go of them easily either.
