Beginners often think professional astrology requires professional software prices. It doesn’t. Some of the most trusted tools in the field are free — used daily by working astrologers — and the craft lies in combining them into a workflow. Here’s the stack and how to use it.

Chart calculation — your daily driver

Astro.com (Astrodienst) remains the reference: precise Swiss Ephemeris calculations, every chart type you’ll realistically need — natal, synastry, composite, returns, progressions — plus an atlas that resolves historical time zones correctly (the silent chart-killer). Astro-Seek is the modern favourite for its speed and generous free tools: aspect tables, dominant calculators, transit searches, even “when is Venus conjunct my MC” style queries. Learn both; default to one.

Ephemerides — the sky as a table

An ephemeris lists planetary positions by date — the raw data behind every chart. Free printable ephemerides cover decades past and future, and reading one teaches you what apps hide: you SEE Mercury slow down before station, watch Mars spend two months in one sign, notice eclipse seasons clustering. One evening with an ephemeris teaches more sky-mechanics than a month of app-tapping.

Research — testing ideas against reality

Public birth-data archives (like the Astro-Databank wiki) collect timed, sourced charts of famous people with a reliability rating for each record. When you learn a technique — say, the T-square — pull twenty charts of people known for achievement and check it. This habit, more than any course, is what turns textbook knowledge into judgment. Respect the ratings: an untimed chart can’t testify about houses.

A workflow that scales

1. Calculate the chart on your daily driver, with birth data verified (ask for the birth certificate time, not memory).
2. Contextualise with the ephemeris: what was the sky doing that season? Retrogrades, eclipses, sign ingresses around the birth date?
3. Cross-check new techniques against known charts before using them on clients.
4. Keep a chart journal — every chart you read, one line of what proved true. Your own archive becomes your best tool within a year.
