Your First Chart Reading, Step by Step

Open a birth chart for the first time and it stares back like a cockpit: wheels, glyphs, angles, a spiderweb of lines. The secret every professional knows is that you don’t read it all — you read it in order. Five steps, always the same, and the chaos becomes a story.

Step 1 — the Big Three

Sun (direction), Moon (needs), Rising (approach). Write one line each. This is the spine of the reading — everything else is detail attached to it.

Step 2 — anything touching the angles

Planets on the Ascendant, IC, Descendant or Midheaven speak with a megaphone. A Saturn on the MC or a Venus rising will be visible in the person’s life story within minutes of meeting them. Note them before any subtlety.

Step 3 — the tightest aspects

Find the two or three aspects with the smallest orbs — whatever they are. Tight aspects are the loudest conversations in the psyche (see The Five Major Aspects). One tight square explains more than ten loose trines.

Step 4 — where the crowd is

Look for loaded houses — three or more planets in one house is a stellium, and that life area is a main storyline no matter what else the chart says. An empty house, meanwhile, is not an empty life: its affairs simply run on the autopilot of its ruling sign.

Step 5 — say it in three sentences

Close every reading by forcing yourself to summarise: one sentence for who they are (steps 1–2), one for their central tension (step 3), one for where life concentrates its action (step 4). If you can’t say it in three sentences, you haven’t finished reading — you’ve finished listing.

The beginner’s protections

• Never predict doom; you’re reading weather, not verdicts.
• When two factors contradict, say so — real charts contain real contradictions, and naming them builds trust.
• Check the birth time before trusting houses and the Rising; an untimed chart still has planets and aspects, but no reliable stage.

Try it yourself

Take a chart you’ve never seen (a friend’s, with permission). Run the five steps with a timer: fifteen minutes, three final sentences. Speed forces prioritisation — which is exactly the skill.

Worked example: the same chart in three questions

Question one — what is rising, and where is its ruler? Leo is rising, so the Sun is the chart ruler. The Sun sits at 22° Aries in the 9th house. That is the spine: this person’s energy runs towards distance, learning and conviction, and it runs fast.
