Horary 7: The Ways a Yes Becomes a No

The significators are applying, the aspect will perfect, and the matter still does not happen. Horary has names for each way that occurs, and they are not bookkeeping — each describes a distinct and recognisable species of thing-falling-through.

Prohibition

A third planet interposes: before the significators complete their aspect, one of them perfects an aspect with something else, which breaks the sequence.

This is the rival, the competing offer, the other buyer. The prohibiting planet describes who or what interrupted, and it is usually identifiable — check what it rules and where it sits.

Refranation

One significator turns retrograde before the aspect completes, pulling back from the contact.

This is a party changing their mind. Not an external interruption but a withdrawal, and the significator that refrains tells you which side pulled out. Refranation is often the most emotionally accurate testimony in a chart, because it describes something the querent has probably already sensed.

Frustration

The aspect would perfect, but one significator meets a malefic first and is damaged by it.

The matter is not interrupted by a rival; it is spoiled. The classic reading is a deal that completes on paper and is ruined in substance.

Abscission and sign change

A significator leaves its sign before the aspect can complete. The promise expires because the conditions changed — a deadline passed, circumstances moved, the window closed.

This is the quietest of the denials and the easiest to overlook, because on a chart it looks exactly like an applying aspect until you check the degrees.

Worked example: a prohibition

Question about buying a specific car. Sagittarius rising, so the querent is Jupiter, at 8° Scorpio. The car, as moveable property, is the 2nd house — Capricorn — so Saturn, at 15° Capricorn. Jupiter applies to a sextile of Saturn: seven degrees, and it would perfect.

But Mars sits at 11° Aries and applies to a square of Saturn, perfecting in four degrees. Mars reaches Saturn before Jupiter does, and takes the light.

Judgement: something interposes before the purchase completes. Mars rules both the 5th and the 12th here, and sits in the 5th — and the querent later reported that a friend’s son had bought the car the previous afternoon, before the enquiry was answered.

Note that the chart did not say “no” in the abstract. It said: this specific thing was taken by somebody else first, and the prohibiting planet described them.
