Not everything in a chart is a planet. The ancients also read lots — calculated points weaving three chart factors into one. The most famous is the Part of Fortune (POF): the point where your body (Ascendant), soul (Moon) and life force (Sun) come into agreement. Where it falls, life tends to flow.

The formula — and why it flips at night
The POF marks where the Moon would be if the Sun were exactly rising — an image of inner and outer light aligned. Lots are sect-sensitive: born by day, count from Sun to Moon; born by night, the reverse.
- Day birth: Ascendant + Moon − Sun
- Night birth: Ascendant + Sun − Moon
One warning before anything else: the POF moves about a degree every four minutes — with an unreliable birth time, it cannot be used. Confirm the time or skip the point.
What the POF describes
Traditional sources tie it to fortune in the tangible sense: ease of livelihood, physical well-being, the places where effort returns more than it costs. Modern practice reads it as the integration point — the life area (house) and style (sign) where your three core lights stop arguing and cooperate. It’s not a guarantee of luck; it’s the address where luck knows where to find you.
Reading it in three moves
- House first: the arena of natural flow. POF in the 6th finds fortune through craft and daily work; in the 11th, through community and networks.
- Sign second: the style of the flow — how fortune prefers to be approached there.
- Then the ruler: the condition and position of the sign’s ruler shows who manages the fortune and how reliably. A dignified ruler steadies the promise; an afflicted one makes it flicker.
The Moon-phase secret
Because the POF measures the Sun–Moon distance, it encodes your lunar phase: born at new moon, the POF hugs the Ascendant; at full moon, it sits near the Descendant. This is a beautiful check on your math — and a reminder that the point is really your Sun-Moon relationship, projected onto the stage of the houses.
Try it yourself
Most chart calculators mark the POF automatically (as ⊗). Confirm your birth time, find its house and sign, then answer honestly: is this where life goes suspiciously well when you let it? Cross-check with two or three friends’ charts — the pattern teaches itself.
