The Solar Return: Your Birthday Chart

Every year, the Sun returns to the exact minute of arc it occupied when you were born. Cast a chart for that instant and you have a solar return: a map of the twelve months that follow. It is the most-requested predictive technique after transits, and the one most often read badly — usually because of a single decision made before the chart is even drawn.

The decision that changes everything

A solar return is cast for a place. Which place is a genuine question, not a technicality: your birthplace, or where you actually are on your birthday?

The planets sit at the same degrees either way — the Sun has returned to a fixed point, so the zodiac is settled. What changes is the house framework: the Ascendant, the Midheaven, and therefore which house every planet lands in. Move a few thousand kilometres and a Mars that was in the 10th is now in the 7th. That is not a nuance; it is a different year.

The working convention is to use where the person actually is. The tradition that supports relocating deliberately for a birthday — choosing a location to get a better return chart — is real and has practitioners. Treat it as an advanced option, and be honest with clients that astrologers disagree about it rather than presenting one school as settled fact.

Reading it in four moves

• The return Ascendant. The tone of the year and the face you meet it with. A Scorpio return Ascendant on a Gemini native produces a markedly more guarded twelve months than they are used to.
• Where the return Sun falls by house. This is the headline. The Sun’s house is what the year is organised around: 6th for work and health, 9th for study and distance, 4th for home and family.
• The angular planets. Anything within a few degrees of the return Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant or IC is loud. A quiet chart with Saturn exactly on the return Midheaven is not a quiet year.
• The return chart against the natal chart. A return Moon landing on your natal Saturn means something specific; a return chart read in isolation is a horoscope for a stranger.

Worked example: the same year, two readings

Someone with a natal Sun at 12° Libra turns 40. Their return chart has the Sun in the 10th house, Saturn conjunct the Ascendant, and Jupiter in the 2nd.
