Secondary Progressions: The Chart That Grows Up

A client says nothing happened and everything changed. No move, no breakup, no new job — and yet they are not the person they were three years ago. Transits will not explain that, because transits describe events arriving from outside. Progressions describe the person changing from inside, and they are the technique most self-taught astrologers skip entirely.

The day-for-a-year key

Secondary progressions use one rule and it is almost absurdly simple: one day after birth stands for one year of life. To see a 34-year-old’s progressed chart, cast a chart for the 34th day after they were born, at the same time and place. That is the whole method. The ephemeris does the rest.

What makes it useful is what that compression does to each body. In 34 days the Moon travels roughly 450°, so the progressed Moon has gone right round the chart and started again. The Sun has moved about 34° — a little over one sign. Mars has crept a few degrees. Saturn has effectively not moved at all.

So progressions are not a second set of transits. They are a slow chart in which only a few things ever change, and every one of those changes is a change in the person.

The three that matter

• The progressed Moon — about 2.5 years per sign, 27-28 years for a full circuit. It is the mood of a chapter: what you need, what you notice, what you are drawn to for a couple of years at a time. It is also the fastest-moving thing in progressions, which makes it the one you feel.
• The progressed Sun — roughly one sign per 30 years. Two, maybe three sign changes in a life. When the progressed Sun changes sign, people describe it afterwards as becoming someone slightly different, and they are usually right.
• Progressed inner planets changing direction. If Mercury or Venus stations — turns retrograde or direct by progression — the function it governs reorganises itself. A progressed Mercury turning retrograde in someone’s thirties is often the point they stop performing fluency and start actually thinking.

Worked example: a progressed Moon chapter

Take someone born with the Moon at 4° Cancer. The progressed Moon moves roughly 1° per year, so it leaves Cancer around age 26 and enters Leo. Cancer’s chapter was about building a base — home, family, the private life. The Leo chapter that follows is about being seen doing something.
