Horary 3: Significators — Who Is Who in the Chart

Horary judgement is not really about aspects. It is about two planets standing for two things, and everything that happens between them being read as what happens between those things. Which means the whole art rests on a step most beginners rush: deciding who is who.

The two you always need

• The querent — the person asking. Signified by the ruler of the 1st house, always, plus the Moon as co-significator.
• The quesited — the thing or person asked about. Signified by the ruler of the house that governs the matter.

That is the whole framework. Its difficulty is entirely in choosing the right house for the matter.

Choosing the house

The house is chosen by what the question is about, and the tradition is more literal here than modern astrology is comfortable with.

• A job — the 10th if it is the career or the employer, the 6th if it is employment as work-you-do or a subordinate position.
• Money you are owed — the 2nd for your money; the debtor’s money is their 2nd, which is the 8th of the chart if they are signified by the 7th.
• A partner or opponent — the 7th. Any named other person who is not family: the lover, the buyer, the person you are negotiating with, and in a court case the opponent.
• A lost object — the 2nd if it is your moveable property. This is more specific than it sounds and gets a whole lesson later.
• A house or property — the 4th, along with land, endings, and the outcome of a matter.

Turning the chart for a third person

If the question is about somebody else’s business — your brother’s job, your mother’s house — you count the house from theirs. The brother is the 3rd; his job is the 10th from the 3rd, which is the 12th of the radix. Count round, and the derived house is what you use.

This is the same mechanism as turned houses elsewhere in astrology, and horary is where it earns its keep, because horary questions are so often about a specific person doing a specific thing.

Worked example: two ways to get it wrong

Question: “Will my landlord return my deposit?” Cast for a chart with Libra rising.

Libra rising means Venus signifies the querent, and the Moon co-signifies. Now the landlord. A landlord is not a partner, and this is not a court case — but they are a specific named other party to a transaction, so the 7th house, ruled by Mars.
