A student learns that the significators must meet by aspect and thinks that is the answer. Then they judge a chart with a clean applying trine, the answer is no, and nothing in what they have read explains it. What was missing is reception: the question of whether each planet is willing to receive the other.

The idea
A planet in another planet’s sign is that planet’s guest. Mars in Taurus is in Venus’s house. Venus therefore receives Mars, and the relationship between them carries an obligation: a host does something for a guest.
The aspect says the two things meet. The reception says how they feel about meeting.
The grades of reception
- By domicile — the planet is in the other’s own sign. The strongest reception, and the one that matters most.
- By exaltation — in the sign of the other’s exaltation. Real, and often over-generous: the host promises more than they deliver.
- Mutual reception — each is in the other’s sign. The two parties want the same outcome, and mutual reception can carry a matter through an aspect that otherwise looks too weak.
- Reception into detriment or fall — the planet sits in a sign where the other is debilitated. This is hostile reception: the contact happens and the receiving planet does the other no favours.
Worked example: a trine that failed
Question about a job offer. Cancer rising, so the Moon signifies the querent; the 10th is Aries, so the employer is Mars. The Moon is at 9° Scorpio and Mars at 12° Cancer — a trine, three degrees from perfecting, and the Moon is the faster body, so it completes.
On aspects alone: yes.
Now look at where they are. The Moon is in Scorpio, its fall. Mars is in Cancer, its fall — and Cancer is the Moon’s own sign, while Scorpio is Mars’s. So each planet sits in the other’s domicile: mutual reception, by the strongest grade there is, while each is as badly placed as it can be.
This is a real configuration and it reads specifically: both parties want it, and neither is in a position to do the other much good. In practice that describes an offer that is made in good faith and then falls apart on terms — which is what happened.
