The Five Major Aspects: How Planets Talk to Each Other

Planets don’t sit in a chart in silence — they talk to each other. An aspect is the geometry of that conversation: the angle between two planets decides whether they collaborate, argue, ignore each other or finish each other’s sentences. Learn five angles, and the chart starts speaking in full sentences.

Aspects are conversations, not verdicts

Before the definitions, one mindset shift: no aspect is “good” or “bad”. A harmonious aspect can make a talent so easy it’s never developed; a tense aspect can be the exact friction that builds mastery. What an aspect really tells you is the tone of the conversation between two parts of a person — and conversations can always be improved.

The five major aspects

Conjunction (0°) — speaking in unison

Two planets stand in the same place and act as one voice. Their agendas fuse: Venus conjunct Mars doesn’t ask “love or desire?” — it wants both at once. A conjunction is the start of a new cycle, raw and undifferentiated, which is why it’s the most powerful and the least self-aware aspect. Whether the fusion feels like a superpower or a tangle depends on how compatible the two planets naturally are.

Sextile (60°) — a friendly offer

The planets are within easy reach of each other and get along — but somebody has to pick up the phone. Sextiles are opportunities, not guarantees: a light, cooperative link that produces results only when you consciously use it. Think of it as a talented acquaintance who would gladly help — if you ever ask.

Square (90°) — the productive argument

Two planets pull in directions that genuinely conflict, and the tension can only be resolved through action. Squares are uncomfortable, motivating, and behind a remarkable share of great achievements — the “no pain, no gain” geometry of the chart. A square never lets you settle; it keeps a project of self-development permanently open. The trick is to give the square real work to do, or it will invent drama instead.

Trine (120°) — finishing each other’s sentences

The planets share the same element and understand each other effortlessly. Talents flow, doors open, things “just work”. The shadow side: trines are so comfortable they breed laziness — a gift that’s never unwrapped. When you find a trine in a chart, ask not “what talent is here?” but “is this talent actually being used?”
