Horary is the branch of astrology that most resembles being given an answer. A natal reading is a description someone can weigh; a horary is a yes or a no, and people act on it. That is the whole reason this course ends on refusal rather than technique.

The four refusals
- The chart declines. Void Moon, or a chart that simply will not signify — significators that do not describe the matter, or a wheel that seems to be about something else. The tradition takes this seriously and so should you. “This chart isn’t answering” is a legitimate professional statement.
- The question is not askable. Compound, already known, asked before, or asking for a moral judgement. Covered in lesson 2; it comes back constantly.
- The question is not theirs. Somebody else’s private business. Covered in lesson 11 and it is the refusal you will use most.
- The stakes are wrong for the method. This is the one nobody teaches, and the most important.
The stakes test
Before judging, ask yourself: what will this person do with my answer?
If the answer is “wait a bit longer” or “stop waiting”, the stakes fit the method. If the answer is “leave my job”, “end my marriage”, “not go to the doctor”, “invest my savings” — the stakes are larger than a technique with horary’s error rate can carry.
You do not refuse those because horary never works. You refuse them because when it is wrong, and it is sometimes wrong, the cost lands on somebody who trusted you. A method that is right most of the time is a fine basis for deciding whether to keep waiting for a text, and a terrible basis for a medical decision.
Say it in those terms and querents almost always understand. Most people are not asking astrology to replace their judgement; they are asking for a nudge, and telling them where the nudge stops being safe is itself good service.
How to refuse without losing the client
- Refuse the question, never the person. “That’s not a question a chart can answer well” lands very differently from “I won’t do that.”
- Say why, in one sentence. People accept a limit they understand and resent one they do not.
- Offer the nearest thing you can do. Almost every refused question has an answerable neighbour, and finding it is the actual skill.
- Do not charge for a refusal, and say so first. It removes any suspicion that the refusal is a sales technique.
