Horary 9: Timing the Answer — and Its Limits

Every horary text gives a timing method, and every experienced practitioner will tell you privately that timing is the part that fails most often. Both facts belong in a course. Here is the method, honestly, and here is what it can actually carry.

The method

Count the degrees between the significators until the aspect perfects. That number becomes a number of time units. Which unit is decided by the mode of the sign the applying significator is in, and by its house.

• Cardinal signs — fast. Days, or sometimes hours.
• Fixed signs — slow. Months, or years for a genuinely slow matter.
• Mutable signs — in between. Weeks.
• Angular houses speed the unit up; succedent is middling; cadent slows it down.

So four degrees between significators, applying planet in a cardinal sign in an angular house, reads as about four days. The same four degrees in a fixed sign in a cadent house reads as four months, possibly longer.

Why it is the weakest part

Three honest problems, none of which the textbooks dwell on.

1. The unit is chosen, not derived. Two competent astrologers can justify days and weeks from the same chart, and the tradition offers no procedure that settles it.
2. The range is enormous. The choice between cardinal-angular and fixed-cadent spans days to months from identical degrees. A method whose output varies by two orders of magnitude on a judgement call is not measuring time.
3. It is unfalsifiable in the way it is usually reported. “Within a few months” is right often enough by chance. The literature records the hits with the same enthusiasm as the length-of-life material did.

What to do instead

Not nothing. Two things that hold up better than a date.

Give a shape, not a date. “This resolves quickly rather than dragging” is supportable from the mode and the house, and it is usually what the querent actually needs. “The 14th of next month” is not supportable, and being wrong about it costs you the credibility you earned on the yes-or-no.

Use the Moon’s sign change as a marker. When the Moon leaves its sign the state of the matter tends to change. That is a boundary rather than a date, and it is the most reliable timing signal in the chart.

Worked example: a shape rather than a date
