Horary 10: Lost Objects — The Proving Ground

Most horary questions are answered slowly and ambiguously. A lost object is answered by opening a drawer. That makes it the best training ground in the art — you find out within the day whether you were right, and no amount of interpretation can rescue a wrong answer.

The houses

• The 2nd house — your moveable possessions. This is the default for a lost object of your own.
• Turned houses for someone else’s property: your partner’s lost keys are the 2nd from the 7th, which is the 8th.
• The 4th — where the thing is, in the sense of the ground, the house, things buried or put away.
• The 7th — if theft is suspected, the thief.

Is it lost or is it stolen?

This is the first judgement and it changes everything after. The tradition looks at whether the significator of the object is in a house associated with the querent’s own space, and whether a peregrine planet sits in an angle — the classic testimony for a thief.

Be careful here. Telling a querent their belongings were stolen, and describing a person, is an accusation. The traditional literature is cheerfully specific about describing thieves; a modern practitioner should not be. If the chart suggests theft, say the object does not appear to be where the querent can retrieve it and stop there.

Describing where it is

This is the part that makes lost-object work convincing when it goes well.

• The element of the sign the object’s significator is in: fire suggests near heat or high up; earth, on or near the ground, in a floor or a low place; air, high, airy, near a window or among papers; water, near water, or damp, or in a kitchen or bathroom.
• The house the significator occupies suggests the room by its own meanings: the 4th, the home itself or a lower floor; the 6th, a workplace or a place of daily routine; the 3rd, a car, a bag, near a sibling or neighbour.
• Angular, succedent or cadent gives rough distance: angular, close and in plain sight; cadent, tucked away and out of the usual path.

Worked example: the earring

Query: a lost earring. Ascendant in Gemini, so Mercury signifies the querent; the 2nd is Cancer, ruled by the Moon.

The Moon is at 20° Virgo — earth, so low and near the ground — in the 4th house, so in the home itself, and specifically a lower part of it. Virgo also suggests somewhere ordered or associated with cleaning and routine.
